The Museu de les Ciències
The City of Arts and Sciences is an architectural, cultural and entertainment complex in Valencia. The complex is organized around an axis, forming its own entity in which l’Hemisfèric, the Palace of the Arts, the Prince Felipe Museum and l’Oceanogràfic are distributed. The use of white concrete throughout the complex in the different buildings, as well as the white and blue trencadís in the cladding of the public space, give unity to the whole project. Throughout Calatrava’s work, the forms gain dynamism with the use of large glazed surfaces. Illuminated from the interior during the night hours, they become a source of constantly evolving interior lighting during the day. This structure acts as a light source, designed to maximize the amount of light entering the building. The structural elements, which are numerous and placed close to each other, can evoke with their shadows the trees of a forest and be a further metaphor for nature.
